Devotional Thought
“the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul. 13 There were more than forty who had formed this plot. 14 These men went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves under a solemn curse that we won’t eat anything until we have killed Paul. 15 So now you, along with the Sanhedrin, make a request to the commander that he bring him down to you as if you were going to investigate his case more thoroughly. But, before he gets near, we are ready to kill him.” 16 But the son of Paul’s sister, hearing about their ambush, came and entered the barracks and reported it to Paul. 17 Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander, because he has something to report to him.” 18 So he took him, brought him to the commander, and said, “The prisoner Paul called me and asked me to bring this young man to you, because he has something to tell you.” 19 The commander took him by the hand, led him aside, and inquired privately, “What is it you have to report to me?” 20 “The Jews,” he said, “have agreed to ask you to bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, as though they are going to hold a somewhat more careful inquiry about him. 21 Don’t let them persuade you, because there are more than forty of them lying in ambush—men who have bound themselves under a curse not to eat or drink until they have killed him. Now they are ready, waiting for your consent.” 22 So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed him, “Don’t tell anyone that you have informed me about this.”
Christian Standard Bible Acts 23:12–22.
I was studying through the book of Acts and I came across this passage. What stood out to me was how God delivered Paul in such an ordinary way. Paul’s Nephew overheard a plot to kill Paul and he saved Paul by telling the authorities about the plot. It’s so simple. It doesn’t even seem miraculous. When Peter was in Jail, an angel came and delivered Peter from the jail. When Paul was in jail previously, God delivered Paul with an earthquake. But in Acts 23:12-22, God did something that seems ordinary to us. But think of how God was in the middle of the situation. God placed Paul’s nephew in a position where he could just happen to overhear the plot to kill Paul. God performed a miracle in this situation, but it seems so ordinary.
I believe that God still performs miracles with what seems like ordinary events today. Four years ago I tried out a free trial for an online christian dating site. It just happened to be at the same time that my wife Michelle was trying out her free trial for the same online christian dating site. Many people would say that Michelle and I met by chance. I prefer to believe that we met by God’s providence.
Even though God spoke to me in a miraculous way about planting a church in KC, this church will only be established and grow through what will seem like very ordinary means. As you partner with us and pray for us, God will open doors and achieve his mission through us.
What are some of the ways that God has performed miracles in your life? What are some of the ordinary ways that God has worked in your life?
